In the Flow

“Go with the flow.” “Be in the flow.” “Flow with it.” “Just let things flow.” It all sounds so nice and peaceful, doesn’t it? Like floating down a gentle river on a lazy summer day. Ahh, can’t you just hear the water lapping, feel the sun on your face?

But wait! How do you actually stay “in the flow” when there is so much going on around you? Errands to run, kids to get ready, work to juggle, places to go, people to see?!?! Sometimes that is when the “flow” seems furthest away, and yet it is also when you need it the most.

Being in a state of flow is very much about being in the present moment. Look at that image of floating down the river. You’re relaxed and enjoying things that are affecting you right NOW (the water, the sun), but you’re also aware of the fact that you’re moving. You’ve just passed under a bridge, you are passing by scenery and people, there is a curve ahead. You have a consciousness about what has happened and what is coming up, and you can plan for it (paddle a bit further to the left to miss that branch), and yet you can also be fully aware of and enjoy where you are right now (wave at the nice family on the bank, splash, splash).

Being in the flow is easier than you think when things get hectic. After all, with all that you have going on around you, you are probably very much in the present moment but trying to plan for the next. What’s missing? Being aware of where you are and what you’re doing, and enjoying it, perhaps.

As your life gets busy and chaotic, use it as an opportunity to get in the state of flow. Check in with yourself and notice what you’re doing -- and ask yourself “what’s great about this moment?” Chances are, even if it feels crazy, you’ll find a morsel of sun or a drop of cool water there somewhere.
