Inspiration for How to Grow a Business

Last week I had the pleasure of attending a special
Denver Coach Federation (DCF) meeting. The monthly
meetings are always enjoyable - chatting with friends
and colleagues in the coaching world, learning new
methods, techniques or approaches, brainstorming and
masterminding with some of the best in the coaching
field. But this month was a different format - a
panel of past presidents of the organization,
assembled to simply share their (vast) collective
wisdom and experience with the room.
While I often like to just sit and listen to where the discussion goes and who asks what question, I was inspired to ask a question of my own, and was in turn so inspired by the answers, I wanted to share.
"Was there a point in your business, or something particular you did, that catapulted you to the next level, whatever that level was for you?"
At first the answers were much what entrepreneurs often hear:
- Have a clear outcome but flexible about how you get there.
- Have a clear niche that you serve
- Find ways to get your name "out there" by writing articles, teaching, speaking, etc.
But somehow the energy then shifted, and the answers on how to accelerate your growth started coming thick and fast, from the heart, from passion about what these tremendous coaches do:
"Find a way to make a difference." - Judy Sabah
"Grow and evolve yourself, and your business will as well." - Laurie Cameron
"Put your profession first. Let go of a client who is not a good fit, even if you're a little worried about money." - Anne Neal
"Do your own internal work first." - Cindy Rold
"Make it a *must* not an option to get to the next level." - Will Matthews
"Leverage anything you do to the next thing. Don't let your activities be isolated." - Laurie Cameron
"Don't do it all yourself - hire people to do your books, your website, your copywriting." - Laura Belsten
"Create an advisory board for support and accountability." - Will Matthews
Through this discussion and other great questions, we collectively left the room re-inspired by our chosen field, our colleagues, and with a handful of new ideas for how we can all be more successful. A true message of hope at a time of year when such messages are part of the story, and at a time in history when we need all the hope and inspiration we can find.
